You have just come back from a war. You witnessed sudden and unimaginable violence and death. You were afraid or numb too much of the time. You dreamed about what it would be like when you were finally home with your family. You made it. You are home. You are excited about making up for lost time, but something feels wrong. You think “I should be happy,” but you don’t feel happy. You feel disconnected and unsafe. You try to forget about what happened.  You don’t want to worry or disappoint your family, but you are afraid you are doing both. You want help, but you are concerned about privacy. You have a lot on your mind and may need to talk about it frequently. However, you know you cannot afford to see a private therapist multiple times a week.

Veterans Family Initiative (VFI) is a not-for-profit group of mental health therapists who offer low-fee psychotherapy to veterans and their families. VFI, as part of the Tampa Bay Relational Center, offers a safe,

welcoming environment where veterans and their families can receive affordable, high quality psychotherapy for as long as needed from experienced clinicians who have advanced training.

Psychotherapy is a collaborative endeavor based on the relationship between and individual and a therapist. Grounded in dialogue, it provides a supportive environment that facilitates trust and allows a person to talk openly with someone who tries to see the world from the client’s point of view.  It is a process which integrates thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and non-verbal communication so a person can live a fuller, more enriched life.

What VFI offers

Individual, Couples, Family Psychotherapy in a confidential, private practice model with no connections with the military or Veteran’s Administration. Our approach is grounded in understanding the whole person, not simply addressing certain thoughts or feelings.  Because we know spouses and children are affected by what veterans have gone through, and by the many absences of soldiers from their families, and because services provided by the VA to families are limited, VFI offers treatment to families and partners as well.

Flexible treatment- Veterans can expect individualized treatment offered by experienced clinicians who are interested in providing personalized care aimed at the best results for each veteran and/or family member(s).

Location- In addition to the Tampa Bay Relational Center — our main office located at 13919 Carrollwood Village Run, Tampa, FL 33618 — VFI offers services in private offices in several locations around Tampa Bay for your convenience.

Private Practice Model- Along a private practice model, VFI offers less bureaucracy, the same therapist each visit, flexible appointment times, quickly scheduled appointments, shorter wait times, greater confidentiality, and accessible parking.  Spanish speaking therapists if requested.

Cost- Seeing a therapist multiple times a week can be prohibitively expensive. This is why we are proud to offer quality counseling at an affordable fee through the VFI.
